Aldi has figured out a way to make both parents and kids happy: vegetables shaped like dinosaurs, teddy bears, and stars.

Aldi sells its SimplyNature Kids Sweet Potato Bites, Spinach Bites, and Broccoli Bites as occasional Special Buy items in boxes in the freezer section. I love these items that are similar to Tator Tots but healthier, but my kids feel only meh about them. I guess they don’t like foods that try to sneak veggies into their diets. Perhaps your kids will like these better.

Let’s take a closer look:

SimplyNature Kids Sweet Potato Bites

These orange bites of goodness are made with sweet potatoes, egg whites, potato flakes, expeller-pressed canola oil, arrowroot, brown sugar, and salt. The Sweet Potato Bites are advertised as non GMO and contain no cholesterol.

They can be baked (the preferred method) for about 9 minutes at 450 degrees (flipping once halfway through). You also can prepare them in the toaster oven, skillet, or microwave. Our family always takes the time to bake them, and honestly, a prep time of less than 10 minutes feels fairly quick.

These Sweet Potato Bites are perhaps my favorite of all the vegetables among this group of offerings. Eating these is like eating a pure hunk of sweet potato that is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. No ketchup or other dips are required. They are that good on their own.

SimplyNature Kids Broccoli Bites

These Broccoli Bites taste a lot like Tator Tots and are made of broccoli, potatoes, onions, egg whites, potato flakes, expeller-pressed canola oil, arrowroot, salt, and garlic. As with the Sweet Potato Bites, these are non-GMO certified and cholesterol free. They do contain small, chewy chunks of broccoli stems, which you may or may not like. They are good enough to eat without ketchup or other dips, but your kids may want them with ketchup anyway.

Similar to the Sweet Potato Bites, these can be prepared in the oven, toaster oven, skillet, or microwave. Our family prefers them baked, at 450 degrees for 9 minutes, flipping halfway through.

SimplyNature Kids Spinach Bites

The Spinach Bites taste almost identical to the Broccoli Bites, except they lack noticeable chunks of veggies like the Broccoli Bites have. The Spinach Bites have a smoother texture. They contain spinach, potatoes, onions, egg whites, potato flakes, expeller-pressed canola oil, arrowroot, salt, and garlic. In keeping with this entire product line, the Spinach Bites are non-GMO certified and have no cholesterol.

They can be prepared in the oven, toaster oven, skillet, or microwave. Again, we bake ours at 450 degrees for 9 minutes, flipping halfway through.

The Verdict:

Aldi’s SimplyNature Kids Sweet Potato Bites, Broccoli Bites, and Spinach Bites are a healthier alternative to plain Tator Tots, and you can’t beat the fun shapes. Your kids may like them, or they may feel like you’re trying to sneak veggies into their meal when they’d rather just have the less-healthy Tator Tots. These are worth a try, though.
