RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – If you’re driving around Richmond, you may have seen a 20-foot inflatable IUD (intrauterine device), which is a form of birth control.

The display is part of Americans for Contraception’s “IUD Express” cross-country tour.

It comes at a time when the city is planning to add a third Planned Parenthood.

Richmond is seeing an increase in out-of-state patients needing abortion care and other health services, and this building is meant to help them and the thousands of patients in the city needing health access, but not everyone is on board.

“I am in support of this as a patient of Planned Parenthood,” a Richmond resident said. “I have been going to Planned Parenthood my whole adult life, and I really come to depend on them and think it would be a great asset to this community.”

Planned Parenthood plans to invest more than $6 million in building a new on-site clinic in Richmond’s northside.

The Virginia League of Planned Parenthood wants to buy the former Brook Hill School on Chamberlayne Avenue from the city for $10.

“I’m just going to tell you physically I am going to vomit,” another Richmond resident said. “That you want to sell this property for $10 to an organization that wants to kill our children.”

In a statement, Virginia League for Planned Parenthood CEO Paulette McElwain said:

“Since the Supreme Court struck down Roe and created a crisis for many folks living in states with abortion bans, the number of patients seeking abortion care in our Richmond health centers has more than doubled. Before the Dobbs decision, we saw about 225 patients a month in Richmond for abortion care and now see more than 500 each month. And the number of folks seeking care from out of state continues to increase.

While we work to meet the emergent need of folks throughout the south who must seek care here in Virginia, we need to ensure we can still provide care to the tens of thousands of folks who rely on us for all of the other services we provide from affordable contraception to gender-affirming care to basic primary care. VLPP intends to increase our capacity to see everyone who needs us.”

“The city council has a duty to make sure that they are providing revenue that will fund things like their education system, which is in poor shape, so the idea that they’re going to kowtow to the abortion industry and give them a sweetheart deal at the expense of our kids’ education should infuriate anybody,” Victoria Cobb, President of The Family Foundation of Virginia said.

VLPP will fund the demolition and build the health center. Richmond currently has two Planned Parenthood locations already.

“I have received excellent care consistently from VLPP,” another Richmond resident said. “I support this new clinic location, and I also support access to affordable patient centers and high-quality care.”

The city council plans to vote to approve the new health center on Monday.
