Pigeons love to perch on window sills where they can look around for potential feeding spots and predators. It’s a simple job to bird proof a window ledge, but what if you have a window that opens outwards? The solution is the Defender® Opening Window Spike. This spike attaches to the actual opening window so moves with the window and sits just above the window sill when the window is closed.

Step 1 – Clean the Area: Before installation, make sure the window frames are properly cleaned. This will ensure that any silicone fixings remain strong and will also make your windows look a lot nicer! Brush any loose dirt and debris off the surface. You may need a scraper especially if there is any flaky paint that needs loosening. Finally a spray and wipe with a disinfectant such as Germ Clear™ Bird Droppings Disinfectant Spray, will get rid of the last bits of pigeon mess. Do allow the surface to dry completely before starting installation.

Step 2 – Protecting the area: With the window shut, offer up the spike to the window to ensure you have the correct position and the bird spike strip is level. This is also a good time to see if you need more than 1 strip. Along the base of the Defender® plastic bird spike are grooves that can be snapped by hand. This makes it very easy to fit the width of the window frame perfectly. The opening window arms can be repositioned along the base too. Very carefully unclip the arms from the base, snap the base to the correct size and then reattach them. Make sure the arms are attached to the correct side of the base and that they are both parallel.

Step 3 – Screwing: The window bird spike comes with 2 supporting arms ready assembled. The arms can be fixed to the outside of the window with either silicone or with screws. To use screws, mark the spots where the arms would be screwed in, the indents either side of the arms base are for this purpose. Make sure that the bird spike is level and covers the entire length of the window frame. Use 4 screws for each bird spike, 2 per supporting arm. Screw the Defender® Opening Window Spike into position and it is instantly ready to deter birds from your window sill.
Step 4 – Silicone: When using silicone, mark where the base of the arm will sit on the frame, ensuring the spike is level and covers the full length of the window. Gently detach the opening window supporting arms from the base. Apply silicone to the base of the window spike arm and then silicone in to the positions you have marked on the frame. Check that the supporting arm is facing upwards. Place something underneath to hold them in position while the silicone sets, a long piece of wood along the window sill is perfect for this. Allow the silicone 24 hours to go off. After this time, the Defender® Opening Window Spike can be reattached to the supporting arms and the piece of supportive wood removed.
